Dear Shelley and Michael,
Thank you for awarding me the 2003 Susanna DeLaurentis Memorial Scholarship.
I am especially honored that the Special Merit Award was created with me in mind. I will cherish both of these awards always.
These awards have a very persona meaning to me in many ways.
Having known Susanna personally, and having faced some of the same challenges that she faced, I feel a special connection to the Susanna DeLaurentis Charitable Foundation, to its Board, and especially to you. I feel you truly undernstand the adversities that have occured in my life and how hard I have worked to do well in school. The recognition, coming from you means more to me than words can express.
My strongest memory of Susanna is her contagious smile and her cheerful desire to live her life and have fun, even while she was very ill. I will never
forget that she and I had plans to go to Color Me Mine together.
Unfortunately, we never made it there; I think we were both looking forward to having fun together and getting to know each other better. Still, even the planning of this event has left me with a memory that I will always value.
I also admire you, for creating the SDCF, using the memory of Susanna to bring the community together to help people and try to make the world a better
place. I look forward to the Walkathon each year because I know I am helping a very worthy cause.
I have learned important things from you and from Susanna.
I hope I can live up to the awards you have given me by trying to face adversity with courage, by doing my best academically at Dickinson College, and by continuing to participate in community service throughout my life. Perhaps in this way I too will keep a small piece of Susanna alive.
I thank you for this touching award and generous scholarship.
Love,
Rachel Melnick
